what are people's perceptions of the progress in AI? With assistance, The Verge conducted a survey of 2,000 individuals, providing some intriguing insights.

1/ AI adoption skews towards younger generations

Millennials and Gen Z comprise the majority of AI users, which is unsurprising given their representation in the American workforce. It aligns with the demographic patterns.

Interestingly, only a small percentage of respondents were familiar with Stable Diffusion or MidJourney. Merely 25% knew about MidJourney, while 23% were aware of Stable Diffusion.

2/ Bard's recognition lagged

Similarly, only 38% of participants were familiar with Bard. How this occurred is quite puzzling.

Considering that Google possesses a leading AI research lab and developed the model upon which other conversational AI systems are built, their late entry affected their market potential. The explanation seems clear-cut.

3/ AI serves as an information tool

Most individuals employ AI for question answering and brainstorming purposes, with the latter being understandable.

However, relying solely on AI for answers is not advisable. The chatbot may generate incorrect or partially inaccurate responses. It's essential to remember that AI is not an encyclopedia.

4/ Demands for improved AI safety and regulation

A significant portion of the surveyed group believes that regulatory bodies should oversee AI development and label AI outputs, prioritizing transparency and responsibility.

76% of participants expressed the desire for regulations and laws governing AI development, while an equal percentage advocated for researchers to meticulously scrutinize datasets for factual errors before training new models.

The questions regarding AI output labeling and the prohibition of deepfakes followed the same trend.

Most notably, people remain uncertain whether to be concerned or excited about AI advancements. The majority of respondents reported experiencing both sentiments, reflecting the early stage of this new era. ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, less than a year ago, yet it has made significant strides.

Opinions will evolve and solidify over time, but these preliminary findings warrant a closer examination if you have the opportunity.
