Macquarie University cyber security experts have developed Apate, a groundbreaking AI-driven system designed to combat scams and protect people from global criminals. By deploying multi-lingual chatbots that engage scammers in lengthy conversations, the aim is to disrupt the scam-calling business model responsible for an estimated $55 billion in losses each year. Apate, named after the Greek goddess of deception, leverages convincing voice clones and Natural Language Processing to deceive scammers and waste their time. Spearheaded by Professor Dali Kaafar, this innovative solution has the potential to revolutionize the fight against fraudsters.

Phone scams orchestrated by organized crime groups have long been a challenge, with the perpetrators rarely caught, and the stolen money seldom recovered. The idea for Apate came to Professor Kaafar when he received a scam call during a family lunch. Recognizing the opportunity to both waste scammers' time and protect vulnerable individuals, he conceived the concept of automating the process with a computerized chatbot. Through extensive analysis of scam phone calls and leveraging advances in Natural Language Processing, the team trained Apate's chatbots on real-world scam conversations, enabling them to engage scammers in convincing conversations that tie them up and reduce successful scams.

Despite efforts by telecommunications providers to block scam calls, the lucrative scamming business continues to thrive globally due to factors like easy location masking and the challenge of updating telecommunications infrastructure for improved authentication.
