Story time

😬When AI went wrong

Recent events, including Elon Musk's call for a six-month halt on AI development and UNESCO's push for greater regulation, highlight the need to assess the risks and benefits of AI. Today, let’s take a look at a few times when AI went wrong, from Microsoft's Tay spewing out offensive comments to an AI camera confusing a bald head with a soccer ball, these examples illustrate, that not everything in AI smells like roses.

💣The Story of Microsoft's Tay turning all Kanye

Back in 2016, Microsoft launched Tay, an AI-powered bot that was supposed to be the life of the party on Twitter. But, as we all know, sometimes the party gets out of hand.

Within just 24 hours, some mischievous Twitter users took advantage of Tay's learning algorithm, and before we knew it, this bot was spitting out some pretty unacceptable stuff. We're talking the whole nine yards: sexism, racism, and more.

Microsoft had to act fast and pull the plug on Tay, and Peter Lee, their VP of research, had to issue an apology for the bot's wayward behavior. “We are deeply sorry for the unintended offensive and hurtful tweets from Tay, which do not represent who we are or what we stand for, nor how we designed Tay.”

🧑‍🦲Ball or Bald Head?

A few years ago, during a soccer match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ayr United, an AI-powered camera meant to track the ball went rogue and started tracking the bald head of a linesman instead. You read that right - the bald head of a linesman.

Apparently, the camera just couldn't tell the difference between the ball and the shiny dome of the linesman. As a result, viewers were treated to some riveting footage of the linesman instead of the real action on the field. We can only imagine how confusing that must have been for the fans watching at home.

Lesson learned: when it comes to AI, sometimes you just can't beat a good old-fashioned Mike the operator.

😳Open your eyes, Asian, - said Face Recognition

Facial recognition software also has its flaws. Just ask Richard Lee, a 22-year-old man who was denied a passport renewal by the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs. Why, you ask? Because the software claimed his eyes were closed in the photo.

But here's the kicker: apparently, this isn't all that uncommon. The department says that nearly 20% of passport photos submitted are rejected due to software errors. Yikes.

Lee wasn't offended about the whole thing. "No hard feelings on my part," he told Reuters. "It was a robot, no hard feelings. I got my passport renewed in the end."

Tips & Tricks

Build your SEO strategy.

Stop brainstorming and inventing the wheel, instead allow ChatGPT to do the hard work for you.

Prompt:
Develop a content strategy for [specific industry/niche] to improve search engine rankings and attract more organic traffic. What topics should we focus on and how frequently should we publish content? The Strategy should include:
- Target audience
- Competitor analysis
- Goals and objectives
Put the strategy in tabular form.

Bank of America's strategists are calling it - AI is about to have its "iPhone moment". This means it's gonna transform everything in a major way! BofA America listed four reasons for this shift:

  • Democratization of data

  • Mass adoption

  • Speedy tech development

  • And plenty of commercial uses.

Large language models like ChatGPT are making data accessible to everyone, which wasn't possible before. In just ten years, AI models could be a million times more powerful than they are today! This will have a massive impact on sectors like tech hardware, software, and cybersecurity, which will be the immediate beneficiaries. According to BofA, AI's ability to capitalize on data could give the world economy a $15.7 trillion boost by 2030, while the AI hardware and services market is predicted to reach $90 billion by 2025 by UBS Global Wealth Management.

ChatGPT reached one million users in just five days, with one billion cumulative visits in three months! That's three times higher than TikTok's adoption rate and ten times higher than Instagram's! This all points to the fact that generative AI technologies like large language models could develop even faster than expected, thanks to advancements in machine learning and deep learning capabilities.
